What is the difference between a salwar and a kameez?

The salwar and kameez are two different components of the traditional South Asian outfit.

Salwar is a type of loose-fitting pant typically narrow at the ankles and broad at the hips. It is worn underneath the kameez and can be pleated or gathered. 

Kameez, on the other hand, is a tunic-style top that can vary in length from short to mid-calf or ankle-length. It has a collarless or mandarin collar design, and sleeves can be short, three-quarter, or full-length. Together, Salwar Kameez make up the complete traditional South Asian outfit that women in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other countries wear.

Popular styles of Salwar Kameez:

Anarkali Style is a long, flowy dress with a fitted bodice and an umbrella-shaped skirt. It is often heavily embellished with embroidery, sequins, or beadwork.
